First military helicopter to fly on biofuel

For the first time in history, a military helicopter has flown on biofuel. An Apache AH-64D military helicopter owned by the Dutch Royal Air Force has completed a demonstration flight at Gilze-Rijen air base using a biological fuel.

One of the two engines on the Apache ran on a mixture of fossil-based kerosene and bio-kerosene. Around 90% of this biokerosene is derived from old cooking oil, and 10% comes from algae oil. Months of preparation preceeded this demonstration flight, which included intensive collaboration between the various organisations, such as Boeing, Honeywell UOP, SkyNRG, NLR, Ingrepro, KLM and General Electric.
