Finnish Govt wants 40% renewable fuels by 2030

In Finland, the government wants to boost the share of renewable fuels to 40% by 2030 compared to current use of 8%. The national industry represented by the petroleum and biofuels association, a recent expansion to the petroleum association indicating the fossil fuel industry’s recognition of biofuels’ role in the transport energy mix in Finland, support the government’s plan as bold and commendable.

Biorefinery in Washington State

In Washington state, Texas-based Riverview Energy is looking to set up a mixed refinery in Longview that would refine 45,000 barrels per day of shale oil from North Dakota and half again as much of used cooking oil and vegetable oils for advanced biofuels and aviation jet fuel.

Researchers successfully dual crop camelina, soybean

The USDA Soil Conservation Research Lab in Morris, Minnesota, found encouraging results when growing Camelina sativa with soybean in the Midwest. The researchers experimented with double- and relay-cropping. In double- cropping, soybean enters the field after the camelina harvest in June or July. Relay- cropping, however, overlaps the crop’s time. Soybean grow between rows of camelina in April or May before the camelina plants mature and flower. The benefits were numerous. Ensyn signs off-take with Youngstown Thermal

Ensyn has signed a contract with Youngstown Thermal LLC for the supply of RFO, Ensyn’s advanced cellulosic biofuel. Ensyn Fuels is to provide Youngstown Therman up to 2.5 million gallons of RFO per year, with deliveries to begin as soon as fourth quater of 2015, in time for the 2015-2016 winter season. Youngstown Thermal will use the RFO to displace up to 50 percent of its fuel need in their natural gas fueled boiler.

Virent and Coke debut 100% plant bottle

The first plastic bottle made entirely from plant-based materials made its debut in Wednesday at the World Expo in Milan, Italy. Coca-Cola has been making its plant-based bottles since 2009, but the plastic in those bottles was only 30% from plant-based materials. Technology developed by Virent enabled plant-based materials to be used on the 70% of the bottle previously used for petroleum.

G7 leaders agree to phase out fossil fuel use by end of century

The G7 leading industrial nations have agreed to cut greenhouse gases by phasing out the use of fossil fuels by the end of the century, Angela Merkel, has announced, in a move hailed as historic by some environmental campaigners. Merkel said the leading industrialised countries were committed to raising $100bn (£65bn) in annual climate financing by 2020 from public and private sources.

Maarten van Dijk re-elected as Treasurer for the RSB Board of Directors

From June 1-3 the RSB General Assembly took place. The assembly opened on Monday with the approval of the New Low iLUC Risk Standard, a strategy session and the election of the Board of Directors. At the latter Maarten van Dijk was re-elected as treasurer for the Board of Directors. The Low ILUC Risk Standard was approved by consensus and will be an ‘optional module’ for operations undergoing RSB certification. Camelina Biofuel A Solution To Food vs Fuel Biofuel Conundrum?

Russ Gesch, a plant physiologist with the USDA Soil Conservation Research Lab in Morris, Minnesota, reports encouraging results when growing the two crops  in the Midwest. “Finding any annual crop that will survive the [Midwest] winters is pretty difficult,” says Gesch, “but winter camelina does that and it has a short enough growing season to allow farmers to grow a second crop after it during the summer.”

Sustainable jet fuels are produced from sustainable feedstocks like waste streams and non-food energy crops.

These fuels offer the single largest opportunity to reduce emissions, while ensuring long term fuel security for the aviation sector.

Sustainable jet fuel blends can be referred to as ‘drop-in’ fuels, because they have the ability to be used without any changes made to the infrastructure, such as distribution and engine fuel systems.
What are Sustainable Jet Fuels?
The aviation industry is the world’s fasted growing transport sector and responsible for approximately 2,5 % of the global manmade CO2 emissions. Even with efficiency measures taken, this figure is expected to rise to 4 – 4.5 per cent by 2050, without any mitigation.

One of the biggest challenges in reducing this impact is to look for solutions that preserve the sectors social benefits, while maintaining its growth.

99% of an airline’s emissions comes from the combustion of jet fuel. Energy sources like solar, electric and hydrogen do not offer an alternative as aviation will be relying on high density liquid energy carriers for the coming decades. Therefore, sustainable jet fuels are viewed as the best opportunity to reduce carbon emissions.
