The Need

Flying is magical. It makes the world smaller and more accessible, leading to a deeper understanding of cultural diversity, promoting greater harmony and boosting economies worldwide. Aviation has become an everyday part of modern life. But this comes at a cost. The world is turning to governments and corporations to reduce human impact on climate change.

Whereas other modes of transport may turn to alternative energy sources like electricity, fuel cells or hydrogen, the commercial aviation industry remains dependent on liquid fuels. Planes cannot fly on electricity, while hydrogen powered flight would make the cost of flying exorbitant and would present serious safety concerns.

Despite the fact that fuel efficiency in aviation has dramatically improved over the past decades, ongoing improvements in aircraft and engine technology are not expected to deliver the breakthroughs in fuel efficiency we need to achieve our environmental goals. For the foreseeable future, we believe that sustainable jet fuel is the only real option for aviation that has a chance to create real impact in this respect.

Creating a viable market for sustainable jet fuels for aviation can only be achieved by combining essential expertise and experience in the fields of air transport, product knowledge, R & D, regulation and effective sustainability criteria. It is for this reason that KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, the North Sea Group and Spring Associates have joined forces and founded SkyNRG in November 2009.
