Gert van der Bijl is Global Programme Manager Livestock & Leather for Solidaridad, an international network organization focused on market-based solutions, working through nine regional expertise centres with people working in 30 countries and across 13 global sectors. Gert holds a Master’s Degree in Development Economics from Wageningen University.
After his graduation Gert worked as international policy advisor for the Dutch Young Farmers Union (NAJK) and as coordinator for international and policy oriented project for CLM, the Centre for Agriculture and Environment, a not-for-profit research and advisory organization. For CLM he coordinated a European research network on sustainability of energy crops. He then joined the Ministry of Agriculture where he worked 7 years, mostly as coordinator innovation policy.
From 2009 until 2015 Gert has been working for Solidaridad, first coordinated the Solidaridad soy programme. During that period he was member of Executive Board of the Round Table on Responsible Soy. Since early 2016 Gert coordinates the Solidaridad livestock programme, working with colleagues in 10 countries on improvements and sustainability in the beef, dairy and leather sectors across Asia, Africa and South America. He is a member of Board of Directors of the Global Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (GRSB) and member of sustainability advisory boards of companies like Nidera, Agrifirm and Keten Duurzaam Varkenvlees (Chain Sustainable Pork).
