The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) is incredibly excited to mark the first approved Book & Claim Unit (BCU) registration for a co-processed batch of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by SkyNRG.
This development reinforces the credibility and scalability of RSB’s approach to Book & Claim as a chain-of-custody solution to decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors like aviation, supporting the wider adoption of sustainable fuels.
What is Book & Claim?
Sustainable fuels are the single biggest opportunity today to decarbonize carbon-intensive sectors, such as aviation and shipping. But the investments needed to develop the necessary technologies, production and supply chains are such that these fuels are only available at limited quantities in a select amount of geographical locations, and at a cost that is still significantly higher than fossil fuels.
Book & Claim offers a solution.
When sustainable fuels, materials and products move along the supply chain, their attributes –including the sustainability benefits – are tracked, documented and verified via a ‘chain of custody’. As a chain-of-custody model, book and claim provides a market mechanism in which a supplier can ‘book’ sustainable fuel and the customer can ‘claim’ the sustainability benefits . While the claimant may not technically fly or ship their goods on sustainable fuel, their purchase demonstrates market confidence and supports the growth of the market, and they can claim the benefits towards their sustainability targets.

Through the RSB Book & Claim Registry (RSB Registry), sustainability attributes are securely transferred via verified BCUs, ensuring traceability and integrity in the market, and reducing the risk associated with double counting. Co-processing and its role in SAF production
Co-processing is an innovative refining technique where renewable feedstocks are mixed with conventional fossil-based feedstocks in existing fossil refineries, producing a partly sustainable fuel. This way, producers can leverage existing infrastructure to scale sustainable fuels like SAF without the need for heavy investments for modifications to or even entirely new facilities.
