SkyNRG and Skellefteå Kraft are entering a partnership under the name Project SkyKraft, an innovative and large-scale project initiated in 2022. The project will further investigate the opportunity to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from renewable electricity and biogenic CO2, known as eSAF. This project will be among the first of its kind globally, positioning Northern Sweden as a leader in the energy transition. eSAF from Project SkyKraft will support the EU’s decarbonization goals and further enhance Skellefteå’s position as Sweden’s hub for next-generation green industry, creating opportunities for the aviation industry to reach net zero emissions.
Key Advantages of Skellefteå for eSAF Production:
- Fossil free and 100% renewable energy: Access to nearly 100% renewable energy supplied by Skellefteå Kraft from hydro and wind power, enabling continuous and cost-efficient eSAF production.
- Competitive and strategic location: Strategically located by Skellefteå harbor, Project SkyKraft will leverage Skellefteå’s abundant renewable energy sources to support the decarbonization of the aviation industry in a competitive way. They will do this in partnership with one of Sweden’s largest producers of renewable energy.
- Biogenic CO2 potential: Sweden holds the largest potential for biogenic CO2 in Europe – and the Skellefteå region has the industrial scale to provide it. SkyKraft requires approximately 1% of the biogenic CO2 currently emitted in Sweden.
