SkyNRG is part of the global B Corp™ movement

Why we are B Corp certified and why you should participate too.

Certified B Corp™

To become a certified B Corp, businesses must meet high standards of verified performance, accountability and transparency in five areas: governance, community, workers, environment and customers. Accreditations are issued by B Lab, a non-profit organization.

With more than 3,500 corporations across 70 countries, B Corp is a global movement of organizations that use business as a force of good – and SkyNRG is one of them.

Certified B Corp

Being a B Corp means that we are part of a movement to redefine what success means in business. For us, benefiting people and the environment is just as important as generating profit. That is why we are a certified B Corporation (B Corp) since October 2021.

We strive to balance purpose and profit, building a company that benefits all stakeholders, not just shareholders. SkyNRG’s B Corp certification is a way of showing our commitment in a transparent and certified way. The certification assessment considers the effects of our decisions on the five B Corp categories:

  • Workers
  • Customers
  • Suppliers
  • Community
  • Environment
The certification process requires us to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability. SkyNRG inherently focuses on the environment, as we were founded to accelerate the decarbonization of the aviation industry. The holistic approach of B Corp helps us to look beyond greenhouse gas emissions and see the value and room for improvement in other areas such as social sustainability.

B Corp certification helps us differentiate ourselves from our peers and attract customers who are looking for sustainable and socially responsible products and services. It also helps us to attract and retain employees who want to work somewhere that turns such values into action.

We believe in leading by example. Obtaining B Corp certification not only validates our efforts, but we hope it encourages other companies to join the movement.

What is a certified B Corp?

A B Corp is a for-profit corporation certified to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. If you join, you will become part of a global movement of thousands of companies – including Patagonia, WeTransfer, TOMS, and BrewDog.

The B Corp movement originated in the US in 2006 with the idea that a different kind of economy was not only possible, but necessary — and that business could lead the way towards a new, stakeholder-driven model.

A B Corp dedicates itself to promoting environmental sustainability and/or social change, thereby positively impacting its communities. This commitment is not just theoretical. B Corps’ bylaws mandate that they genuinely benefit society and provide regular reports on their positive impact to shareholders. Unlike in traditional businesses, B Corps’ shareholders hold them accountable not only for their profits but also for their contributions to the greater good.

By being independently audited, companies are signaling to the world that they are serious about their efforts to go beyond profit and into positive change. To assure transparency to the public, the final assessment is made available in the B Corp Directory. Recommendations on areas of improvement are also provided together with the evaluation.

A journey, not a goal
To become a B Corp you have to undergo an extensive accreditation process. If you score higher than 80 points, you will receive B Corp certification. For reference, the average company scores about 50 points.

Only companies that reach a score above 80 points (out of 200) during the assessment are officially B Corp certified. Every three years, every B Corp must go through a recertification process to keep its certification. We currently score 81.5. To put this into perspective, Patagonia, one of the earliest adopters, scores 151.5 points, while Tony’s Chocolonely is at 100.9 and WeTransfer achieves 80.4. With our score of 81.5, we know that we are on the right track, but we also see a lot of room for improvement room for improvement.

We aren’t the only ones trying to improve. B Lab also evolves their standards and has done so six times in the past 17 years. The standards continuously advance to meet the magnitude of challenges such as climate change and social inequality over time.

Making an impact

We enable impact by helping our customers reduce their greenhouse gas emissions from flying and educating them on environmental topics through the products we sell. But we also want to measure and improve our impact from our own operations: We are working towards becoming a leading B Corp, next to becoming a major player in the SAF business.

Internal Impact
We offer employees many ways to make a positive impact themselves; we provide a fully paid day to volunteer in the local community and additional days off if you use sustainable transportation, such as train, to go on vacation, or choose for a “staycation” close to home.

We also have Sustainability Working Groups who continuously review a wide range of topics from our purchasing policies to our business travel policies, to our volunteering activities.

To highlight a few of our initiatives, we:

  • incentivize low carbon commuting by providing 1st class train travel and a bike plan for all employees in the Netherlands.
  • purchase SAF to cover 100% of our CO2 emissions from business air travel.
  • generate renewable electricity from our rooftop solar panels.

Impact through action
We think it is important to give back, which is why we regularly participate in volunteer activities during paid working hours such as planting trees on Green Friday (an alternative to Black Friday, where you plant trees instead of buying things), doing canal clean-ups, and regular Friday afternoon walks with the residents of a nearby elderly home.

Impact through customers
We help some of the world’s leading airlines, OEM manufacturers, and corporates reduce their GHG emissions from flying by sourcing SAF credits from us. We also support a wide range of corporate customers like Bank of America, Deloitte and DHL in reducing their business travel GHG emissions via SAF certificates.

Looking ahead

SkyNRG received its initial B Corp certification in 2021. But achieving this certification does not mean the end of our B Corp journey. While we are on the right path, there is always room for improvement. We are continuously identifying these areas for improvement, involving relevant team members and developing concrete plans. This is particularly important as our business is about to change dramatically once we start building and operating our own SAF production facilities.

We’re excited to continue our B Corp journey with like-minded companies. Because of its new and innovative nature, our business relies on partnerships. On sharing knowledge so we can improve our production, our product, and our organization for all stakeholders.

In the coming years we will be expanding our business and will become a SAF producer. B Corp certification will help us to keep us on the right path and ensure that we continue to do business for good as we grow. We will need outside investments to build the SAF facilities we envision. Becoming a B Corp provides us with a legal structure and ensures that our values are embedded in our operations and company. This way, even as we seek additional capital in the future, our commitment to our mission remains intact.
