E-fuel from green hydrogen and CO2
Synkero aims to develop a commercial scale facility in the port of Amsterdam to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel from green hydrogen and CO2 (eSAF). eSAF is a crucial part of a sustainable future for aviation and its use is mandatory in Europe from 2030 onwards under the ReFuelEU Aviation blending mandate.
The project progressed significantly in recent years; Technology was selected, the conceptual design study was completed, a site was chosen, and an extensive effort was made to secure a competitive feedstock supply. As a result, in-depth knowledge was built around technology to produce eSAF and the requirements to have a viable business case. Despite the progress and the commitment from the partners, there is no viable business case at this point in time. This is mainly due to three external factors:
- Availability of competitively priced green hydrogen in the Netherlands.
- Availability of biogenic CO2 for eSAF production, which is challenged by the targets for carbon capture and storage.
- Grid congestion and the resulting limitations for obtaining a grid connection for the project.
Consequently, the project is on hold so that these issues can be addressed before development continues.
