SAF Procurement for corporates under the Book and Claim system

In this blog post, you can learn all about how corporates can buy Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from SkyNRG under the Book and Claim System.

SkyNRG services a wide range of partners including airlines, corporates, freight forwarders, travel companies and individual consumers. We offer the opportunity to purchase Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and reduce emissions on Scope 1 (jet fuel burn) and Scope 3 (business travel and air freight), primarily through the utilization of the Book and Claim system.

Book and Claim is the framework that promotes the scale-up of the SAF industry and offers the following benefits:

  • Airline and location independence: It allows buyers to source SAF globally without reliance on a specific airline or location
  • More sustainable supply chains: SAF can be delivered close to its point of origin, reducing the length of supply chains and thereby further decreasing emissions
  • Reduces overall cost: It allows access into incentivized markets, whilst sharing the SAF premium between Scope 1 and Scope 3 buyers
So how can corporates take advantage of the benefits of SAF, and what does the purchase process look like?

This depends on the kind of organization you are. We start a partnership by understanding your business, objectives, decarbonization targets, emissions data and more. Once we have clarity on these points, you receive a proposal outlining the required quantity of SAF claims to achieve your targets, the applicable price range and the broader commercial terms, for you to review and assess. These commercial terms include the confirmation and delivery deadlines by which the SAF claims will be provided.

Once the commercial terms are agreed, we move on to the standard contracting process for the initial order. After this point, the below image outlines how we carry out the delivery of the order.

Why do we use a price range, and why can we not provide you with your SAF straight away?

In 2024, S&P Global estimates global SAF supply will reach 2.13 million mt, of which 2.03 million mt will be from the HEFA (Hydro-processed Esthers and Fatty Acids) pathway. They also estimate that global SAF demand could reach 2.156 million mt in 2024, but this masks the demand from voluntary markets and corporate institutions looking to reduce their Scope 3 emissions with the use of SAF claims. Hence, it is expected that under-supply will lead to continued high, and likely volatile, prices, especially in the face of incoming European SAF mandates.

For these reasons, and due to the ever-changing value of the various regional and airport incentives, the cost of SAF is always fluctuating. SkyNRG operates an alternative business model – we do not hold an inventory of SAF or SAF claims that can be sold on request. Within the various partnerships we hold, we build demand ensuring availability on the supply side through our global network of producers.

What are you actually buying when you purchase SAF Claims?

If you’re purchasing Scope 1 and/or 3 SAF claims under the Book and Claim system, you will not receive any physical fuel. In effect, you are buying the sustainability attributes of the fuel. In order to provide credible evidence which you can use in your reporting to meet your voluntary (often science-based) targets, we provide the following information as part of the Scope 1 and 3 SAF claims:

  • Quantity of SAF (metric tonnes)
  • Final CO2e savings (metric tonnes)
  • Confirmation of Scope 1 or 3
  • Contract reference number
  • Calculation methodology
  • Lifecycle Assessment breakdown
  • Delivery date
  • Airport delivery location
  • Feedstock description and certification
  • Validity period (i.e. valid for 2 years from point of physical supply)

We provide an Impact Report following the end of each year, aggregating all SAF claims that have been provided to you. This document includes:

  • CEO foreword
  • SkyNRG & BU highlights
  • Customer impact summary
  • SkyNRG’s RSB certification
  • SkyNRG’s annual audit report
Compliance

Our activities and SAF accounting are audited annually by independent third parties who ensure there is no double counting, double claiming or discrepancies in our management of SAF claims. We are also a member and certified operator of RSB, which demonstrates our commitment to accountability, transparency and sustainability.
